Answering services
What you are actually buying instead of an answering service.
An answering service sells you coverage: somebody picks up, takes a message, and passes it on. An AI agent sells you an answer: the caller gets the information they rang for, and only the calls that need a person become a message. Those are different products, and one of them is not automatically better.
Side by side
What a traditional answering service publishes, and what is true here.
Every sentence in the a traditional answering service column comes from their own public page, read on 8 September 2026. Prices and plans change, so check the source before you decide anything on the strength of it.
What the caller gets
a traditional answering service
A person takes a message and passes it to you. Whether they answer the question depends on what you have briefed them on.
agentmomo
An answer to the question, from your own material, or a plain statement that it cannot answer and a handoff.
What it costs, at the published end
a traditional answering service
Smith.ai publishes $300 per month for 30 calls, rising to $2,100 for 300. Ruby publishes plans described as 50 to 500 minutes per month.
agentmomo
Not published. The tiers are not set, and this site does not print a number the operator has not decided.
What happens at 6pm when three people call
a traditional answering service
They are answered by whoever is free, in the order they arrive.
agentmomo
All three are answered at once. There is no queue because there is nobody to queue behind.
The record
a traditional answering service
A message, in whatever form the service sends it.
agentmomo
Text transcripts of every conversation on every channel, readable afterwards. No call recordings exist anywhere in the system.
Judgement
a traditional answering service
A person can tell that the caller is upset, that this one matters, and that the script does not fit. That is the thing you are paying for.
agentmomo
It follows its rules. It does not improvise, which is the point, and it does not read a room, which is the cost.

Where they win
When a person is worth every cent of the difference.
- The call needs judgement more often than it needs information. A service where someone can tell that this caller is not fine is worth the per-call price.
- You need dispatch, triage or escalation decisions made by a person, out of hours, tonight.
- Your callers would be insulted to reach anything but a person. You know your callers and we do not.
Questions
What people ask when they land here.
Can I run both?
Plenty of businesses would want to: the agent answers everything, and calls it cannot handle go to a service or a person. We do not sell the human half, so that arrangement is something you would assemble yourself with call forwarding.
What does a caller hear when it cannot help?
It says it does not know, takes their name, number and what they wanted, and hands that to you. It does not guess, which is the failure mode that costs you a customer rather than a call.
How do I judge this without taking your word for it?
Call the demo line or use the chat on this site and ask it the question you would be most afraid of it getting wrong. That takes about a minute and is worth more than any table on this page.
